Bush & Banter | An intro to weather, maps & gear for the bush
Details
Join us for a session in the classroom and bush, designed to build your confidence outdoors. This hands-on workshop blends practical learning, shared kai, and time in the ngahere (forest).
We’ll begin in a sheltered, bush-side setting with relaxed, classroom-style learning. You’ll get the essentials of:
- Basic navigation with topographic maps and the Topo50 phone app
- Basics of reading weather maps and understanding how they affect your trip
- Packing right: what’s essential, what’s optional, and how to carry it well
- Gear tips: what’s worth investing in, and what you can do without
After a bbq including wild kai, we’ll head out on a short bush walk (approx. 40 minutes) before reaching a clearing. Here you’ll get hands-on with:
- Setting up tents, stoves, and other key gear if you haven’t done so before
- Sharing stories, experience and kōrero
- Fire-making or camp set-up techniques (if time and weather allow).
We’ll finish by walking out the remaining 15mins.
This is an intro-friendly event—perfect if you’re curious about tramping, hunting, or just want to grow your outdoor skills. Expect a welcoming, down-to-earth vibe and plenty of practical takeaways.
