South Bury Saunter

New joiners welcome! 🥾
Join Cathy for this easy 8.5 mile walk from Bury.
From the tram stop we'll head off the roads as soon as we can onto paths over the railway, the Irwell and towards Elton Reservoir. After skirting the edge of the water we head across fields, past the very empty Withins reservoir, towards Radcliffe. The fields are uneven underfoot and may contain horses so care should be taken here.
Past Radcliffe Cemetery, we join up with paths to get to the canal for a while until we turn to follow the river instead. A little more road walking is necessary there, to link up with a path past Goshen Sports Centre and continuing along the River Irwell back towards Bury.
A final detour loop takes us through Openshaw Park, nearly but not quite to my house, before heading through Bury Market to the tram stop - if people want to stop off to explore the market they are very welcome, otherwise we'll probably head to the East Lancs Railway station for drinks at The Trackside.
Should be a nice easy walk, but walking boots are still recommended as depending on weather conditions some sections could be muddy and/or uneven.
Social - Later that evening, from 6:30pm, Cathy is hosting a social at Bury Arcade - if you've joined us for the walk you're welcome to come along to this too. Details and entry cost here.

FAQs:
What to wear? The route is fairly easy-going, but some of the paths are likely to be muddy, so walking shoes or boots are advised. Also really good are light-weight trousers.
Can I bring a dog? Dogs are welcome on a short lead, see https://www.madwalkers.org.uk/about-us/policies/dogs-on-walks-policy/ for details.
Can I drive to the walk start? You’re more than welcome to meet us at Bury Interchange — just make sure to arrive before 10:30am. The walk will start on time, we cannot wait for late arrivals, sorry. We will wait for the tram from Manchester.
Many of our members are not on Meetup, so the RSVP list will be smaller than the total number of attendees. Typically around 30 people join each walk, so there's plenty of people to chat with.
