What we’re about

Deep Ecology is an approach to environmental philosophy and activism which views human and non-human life as deeply intertwined, and that animal and other non-human forms of life are valuable in themselves, not simply through their utility to humans. All have the right to flourish and be happy in their own way. The approach was first named and set out by Norwegian ecophilosopher Arne Naess in 1972. Deep Ecology is "deep" because it looks deeper than the human into the multiple, profound communities of the living Earth.

Each month we'll read from the writings of Naess and others, and explore how we can engage in our own lives and society to support the flourishing of the world as a whole, human and animal, mountain and mycelium. Deep Ecology philosophy will be a starting point and focus for developing our own independent thinking, and for pooling ideas from other writers and activists. The gatherings will strengthen our our understanding and capacity to live from this powerful and compassionate perspective.

Our discussions will respect multiple and diverse views and approaches to the environment and the complex problems and opportunities facing us all.
