What is Morality, and what are its origins?

Details
For our August meetup we're going to explore the topic of morality.
The nature of morality and how it originated is one of the most enduring philosophical questions in human history. It's generally accepted as the feature of human individuals and societies that separates us from other living creatures.
But what is Morality? It could be said that it takes into account good versus evil, right versus wrong, and informs us in making choices in how we should live our lives. Do we have an innate sense of morality and inevitably feel guilt if we fail to follow our moral values?
Does it mainly apply to big ethical questions or also to small decisions in our everyday lives? What is the distinction between morals and ethics? To what degree is morality universal across the world, or just a social construct which differs depending on cultural and historical circumstances? There are some philosophers who say it doesn't exist at all outside of our minds. So where does our understanding of morality come from? Is it something each culture or individual just makes up, based on whatever religion is prevalent, or is it a result of evolution?
In this meeting we want to take a deep dive into this topic. We want to address this mysterious concept, and the arguments and counter arguments that inform our sense of right and wrong.
We’re a friendly bunch, and you'll be welcome to continue the conversation well past the meeting's official end at 4pm. Grab a drink at the bar and come upstairs for some lively, open and honest chat. All good faith opinions will be welcomed and respected. We don't charge for our events but we do ask for a small cash donation to help pay for the room and Meetup membership.
