Manc NodeJS #9 Serverless: Lambda in 2021 & Contact tracing with JavaScript

Details

We are back this May with an online meetup (the link will be provided before the event) and looking forward to these tech topics:

  1. What you can do with Lambda in 2021?

Speaker: Yan Cui

In this talk, we will discuss 10 common use cases for AWS Lambda such as REST APIs, GraphQL, WebSockets, IoT and building event-driven systems.

We will also touch on some of the latest platform features such as for Lambda and when and where we should use them.

Yan is an experienced engineer who has run production workload at scale in AWS for over 10 years. He has been an architect and principal engineer with a variety of industries ranging from banking, e-commerce, sports streaming to mobile gaming. He has worked extensively with AWS Lambda in production since 2016. Nowadays, he splits his time between advancing the state of serverless observability as a Developer Advocate at http://lumigo.io and helping companies around the world adopt serverless as an independent consultant.

Yan is also an AWS Serverless Hero and a regular speaker at user groups and conferences internationally. He is also the author of Production-Ready Serverless and co-author of Serverless Architectures on AWS, 2nd Edition, both by Manning. And he keeps an active blog at https://theburningmonk.com and hosts a weekly podcast at https://realworldserverless.com.

  1. Fighting covid-19 with serverless JS: A story about contact tracing

Speaker: David Gonzalez

COVID-19 threw a wrench into the engine of the world in 2020. One thing became clear: tracing contacts was of high importance in order to control the spread of the disease.

This talk is about how technology helped us to build a planetary scale solution used by millions of users to trace contacts that otherwise would have gone unnoticed.

David will expose the biggest problems but also the biggest wins on building a technology based contact tracing app in Javascript.

David is a Tech enthusiast that got specialized in distributed systems as he believes that the future is leaning towards more manageable small software components.

He has spent the majority of his professional life in the finance world creating enterprise grade applications in Java but, in the recent years, with the world gravitating to the cloud, he has specialized in writing heterogeneus systems in different languages such as Java, Javascript or Go but with a very strong focus on Kubernetes and containers as they provide a common ground to manage enterprise grade microservices.

He also loves cycling and walking with his dogs in the green Ireland.
