Details

------ Welcome, Manchester R Users! ------

Welcome back to my favourite R Meetup! Summer's coming, and so are a load of awesome talks for you all...

As before, the event will be brought to you by Datacove. We are a Data and Analytics Consultancy Team based in Brighton, with experience in founding many well-attended events for R and Python.

We will be supported by the generous team at Better Placed, at Colony, Ayton Street, Manchester. Hosted by Abbie Brookes from Datacove.

------ Talk One ------

For our first talk, we are thrilled to be hosting Nicola Rennie PhD , Lecturer in Health Data Science at Lancaster University. Nicola began her career working as a Mathematical Consultant, before venturing into a Data Scientist and even becoming a Chapter Organiser for R-Ladies Lancaster.

She will be sharing her expertise on "Faster R Code with Rust". She further explains, "My R code is slow is a common complaint, especially when datasets get larger and more complex. This talk will demonstrate re-writing functions in Rust and showing a run-speed comparison when using Rust for vectorising operations in R."

------ Talk Two ------

Secondly, we have the pleasure of being joined by Daniel Durling, Senior Data Scientist at Voicescape. Daniel began his career working as a Project Implementation Assistant at The Bank of England, climbing the ladder up to a Data Scientist while thriving there for over 14 years. Later, Daniel progressed to working as a Senior Scientist for Crimson Macaw Limited and now Voicescape.

He will be enlightening us with a talk on, "Surviving Tidymodels: Getting to Grips with the Censored Package". This talk is focused on understanding the censored package, a parsnip extension package which provides engines for various models for censored regression and survival analysis.

------ General Information ------

Now, refreshments! Drinks and pizza will be served from 6pm. Talks will commence at 6:30pm/6:45pm and the event will conclude at 8:30pm. The conversation will continue after the event at a local pub TBC – obviously!

If you didn't already have a million reasons to come, there will be (free!) R Merchandise kindly sent by Posit themselves.

Please feel free to register guests and spread the word. We look forward to seeing you all again!
