Joshi Herrmann: Decline of local news.
Details
Joshi Herrmann is the founder of Mill Media, which publishes high quality local journalism in Manchester, Glasgow, Birmingham, Liverpool, Sheffield and now London too. Best known for its deeply reported long reads and paid newsletter model, the company has been described by the FT’s John Burn-Murdoch as “one of the most interesting and impressive media startups of the last decade” and recently received investment from figures including CNN chief executive, and former BBC director general, Sir Mark Thompson. Joshi founded The Mill, a local newsletter covering Greater Manchester, as a one-man band in June 2020, and the company now has staff writers and editors across six cities. It is read by more than 150,000 email subscribers and funded by 9,000 paying members, as well as corporate sponsorship partners. Senator Bernie Sanders visited Mill Media’s office in Manchester last year and described the crisis in local news as a “disaster for democracy”. In the past, Joshi has reported for The Times, The Telegraph, The Guardian and The London Evening Standard and has twice been Highly Commended at the British Press Awards.
