What we're about

Manchester Go Club is a friendly and well-established club with a history spanning over 50 years. We meet twice a week in the city centre to play the ancient Chinese board game Go (aka 圍棋, 围棋, 바둑 and 囲碁).

Go is an abstract strategy game for two players. The aim of the game is to surround more territory than your opponent. It is played by placing black and white stones onto the intersections of a 19x19 grid. The rules are simple and can be learnt in under 5 minutes, but mastering the game takes a lifetime.

We love welcoming new players to our club and you don't need to know anything about the game before attending a meetup. Membership is free and there's no need to bring any equipment with you.

Upcoming events (5+)

Thursday Go Meetup (Beginners Welcome)

The Shakespeare Pub

Come and join us to learn and play the game of Go. This is our main weekly meetup and is held at The Shakespeare pub just off Market Street (you'll find us in the area to the left of the bar). Feel free to come along at any time that suits you! The event is free, although we'd ask you to consider supporting the venue by purchasing drinks. There's no need to bring any equipment with you and it's fine if you don't know anything about the game - we are happy to teach you the rules :)

Sunday Go Meetup (Beginners Welcome)

Nexus Art Cafe

Come and join us to learn and play the game of Go. This is our second, smaller weekly meetup in a child-friendly venue. We normally play at Nexus until it closes at 5pm, then move on to The Shakespeare pub. Sometimes we get food together inbetween. If the weather is nice then we play outside at Cathedral Gardens instead (by the National Football Museum). If this is the case, we'll post a message on the day to let you know. Feel free to come along at any time that suits you! The event is free (excluding the food if you opt for it), although we'd ask you to consider supporting the venue by purchasing drinks. There's no need to bring any equipment with you and it's fine if you don't know anything about the game - we are happy to teach you the rules :)
