What we’re about

Hello everyone,

I hope this message finds you all in good health and high spirits. My name is Allan Elder, and I am thrilled to have recently moved to this wonderful area. As a long-time practitioner of Shotokan karate, I wanted to take a moment to reach out to the community and extend an invitation to join me in training.

Now, before I continue, please allow me to clarify that I am not here to sell or market anything. My sole intention is to share my passion for the traditional Japanese karate style of Shotokan with those who are interested in learning. Having dedicated over 40 years of my life to this beautiful art form, I believe it is my duty and privilege to pass on my knowledge and experience.

You see, my journey in Shotokan karate has been quite remarkable. I started training in 1980 and then after spending 10 years serving in the U.S. Army, exchanging ideas and learning from people all around the world, I had the opportunity to compete in international tournaments, which allowed me to grow both as a martial artist and as an individual. Additionally, I was fortunate enough to immerse myself in Japanese culture by living in a school for the sword on a breathtaking mountain top in Hawaii, as well as training in Japan, Okinawa, and Korea. These experiences have shaped me into the person I am today.

But enough about me – let's talk about what you can gain from joining our training sessions. Firstly, it's important to note that our classes are open to individuals aged 15 and above. However, I want to emphasize that age should never be a barrier when it comes to pursuing martial arts. In fact, people in their 40s, 50s, and 60s can benefit immensely from practicing Shotokan karate.

Why? Well, apart from the obvious physical benefits such as increased mobility and athleticism, training in Shotokan karate offers so much more. It provides valuable insight into Japanese culture – its rich history and traditions – allowing you not only to develop your physical skills but also to deepen your understanding of a fascinating culture.

Moreover, self-defense is an integral part of our training. In today's world, it's crucial to possess the knowledge and skills to protect oneself and loved ones if necessary. Shotokan karate equips you with practical self-defense techniques that can be applied in real-life situations.

Now, I want to make it clear that sparring is not the main focus of our classes. However, for those who seek an extra challenge and wish to explore the art further, or have a desire for competition, I do offer opportunities for sparring. It is entirely optional and available to those who choose to take on the additional challenges it provides.

Lastly, I want to stress that there is no cost associated with joining our training sessions. The only requirement is a commitment to show up and give your best effort. Our beginner classes will commence as soon as five individuals commit to training three times a week – specifically on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday – at 6:00 pm. After that, it will be four months before I consider another beginner group.

If you are interested in embarking on this incredible journey with me or have any questions whatsoever, please do not hesitate to reach out. I am more than happy to provide any additional information you may need. If you are parents with a child interested in learning karate, I would need to meet with all of you together to ensure it’s the right choice for your child. Additionally, many families find training together is a wonderful way to bond and grow together. Note that attendees under the age of 18 must have a guardian with them.

Thank you for taking the time to read this message, and I look forward to meeting all of you soon.

Warm regards,
Allan Elder
