Flooded streets are not unknown in South Florida. Now is the chance to be a citizen scientist and do something about it! Maptime Miami joins the GIS Center and Extreme Events Institutes of the Florida International University on their journey to map flood locations in the Greater Miami Area! Come to Matheson Hammock Park this Saturday and help us document the king tide. Your job will be to take geolocated photographs of floods which will help FIU scientists validate inundation models and hopefully improve them.

King Tides are back starting from this weekend. Apart from being a major inconvenience in coastal areas, they provide a lens to look at future sea levels. We would like to utilize this and have an accurate measure of the high water marks in Matheson Hammock Park. This information will be used by FIU scientists to validate and improve inundation models. This case study is the first step in this direction.

Read more about the project at http://slr.fiu.edu and come out Saturday (October 26) early in the morning and join us in our effort. If you can't make it there in the morning you can continue taking photos during the day. The 2nd high tide of the day will be at 7:37pm which is also a great opportunity to make observations.

In addition, keep taking geotagged photos of floods whenever you see them in Greater Miami so that ultimately we can have the most detailed and up to date database of flooding in South Florida.

Here's what you'll need to do:

1. Turn on your phone's GPS
2. Take photos flooded roads, parking lots, beaches, parks, properties
3. Make sure that the location is saved with the photo
4. Send your photos to Maptime or FIU so that they can be included in the research and used to validate/improve inundation models

There are a couple ways to get your photos to us:
- Use our citizen science platform (on your phone or on the web) to take and upload photos at the same time: https://anecdata.org/projects/view/567. Look for and join the project called "Catch the Tide, Miami - Peeking at Future Sea Levels"
- Upload your photos to Flickr and use a flood related description, title or tag (e.g. #FloodMiami). We will be able to harvest these photos
- Share your flood related content and location on social media and use #FloodMiami. You can also interact with our Twitter @FloodMiami (https://twitter.com/FloodMiami).
