Today, within the fast-paced high-energy world of webmaps, map-apps and devlabs, we tend to forget that quite a lot of mapping still happens in good old fashioned GIS desktop software. Really? Yes! Over the last few years, QGIS has made a real jump forward, becoming more and more the mainstream player in geo-information science.

This Maptime, we'll discover the GIS-way of making maps, visualizing (Dutch) public open data. We'll make sure that every one of you has a short story to tell with easy to obtain census (CBS) data, or something similar. And we'll look into the extreme relaxed way of using PDOK data in QGIS.

As we only have one evening to get to work with QGIS (and not to burden the wifi too much that evening), it’s best to come prepared: please have QGIS installed on your laptop before the meetup. Mac users be warned: this is one of those rare instances that the mac installation is not as smooth as the one for windows. Please follow the instructions by Kyngchaos (http://www.kyngchaos.com/software/qgis) (the mac installers are on that domain). They tend to make QGIS work on a Mac.

About Maptime

Maptime Utrecht is a map hack night hosted by Webmapper (http://webmapper.net). We meet once every two months on a Wednesday to work on maps, learn about geospatial data, and teach each other the latest cartographic tools.

Maptime is, rather literally, time for map making. Our mission is to open the doors of cartographic possibility to anyone interested by creating a time and space for collaborative learning, exploration, and map creation using mapping tools and technologies.

This open learning environment for all levels and degrees of knowledge offers intentional support for the beginner. Maptime is simultaneously flexible and structured: creating space for workshops, ongoing projects with a shared goal, and independent/collaborative work time.

Inspiration for Maptime comes from both hack nights and knitting circles. Both are models of spaces for people to create and learn together. Our goal is to provide this space with an open heart and without pretension. You can bring your own projects to work on, just hang out and socialize, or ask questions. Some people are experts, and some people are just getting started, but all of us are learning. So, why not do it together?
