What is the Arts Datathon?

The datathon has been an annual event since 2017, bringing together people across the arts and technology spaces to explore how we can use data to improve access to the arts.

This year's event is focused on the theme of "Discovery," encouraging participants to focus on process rather than product. Arts Datathon: Discovery is FREE for all participants, and coffee/lunch will be provided.

There will be four unique workshops in which participants can explore the intersection of arts and data:

  • Anyone Can Map! A Civic Art Mapathon (Led by MaptimeLA Organizers Nina Kin and Omar Ureta): Learn how to map cultural landmarks and public artwork on Google Maps and OpenStreetMap using LA County’s Civic Art collection.
  • Artful Narratives: Learning StoryMapping With Public Art Data: Utilize ArcGIS StoryMaps, an easy-to-use online application to craft a compelling, interactive narrative inspired by data about public art.
  • Hacking the Prompt: Using AI to Analyze and Visualize Data: Participants will experiment with prompting AI chatbots (such as ChatGPT) to learn how to analyze and visualize data. Step-by-step guidance in this collaborative session will prepare anyone to use these emerging tools in their own lives with data they already have on hand.
  • The Labor of Looking: Collaboratively build an analog dataset using images from magazines, newspapers, and photobooks to answer survey questions around artistic labor, funding, and other topics, while exploring the issues inherent to data collection and image literacy.
