Join Marion Audubon’s President, Max Weakley, on a field trip to the Ocala National Forest to close out the Global Big Day! This day, the first Saturday of May, is when birders from around the world try to find as many species as possible within a 24-hour period.

FR88 (also called Forest Road 88 or NE 231st Ave) is a great location where we've had some wonderful luck in the past. Here, we can hope to see the regionally endangered Red-cockaded Woodpecker. We also have a good chance for Florida Scrub-Jay, Bachman's Sparrow, Brown-headed Nuthatch, and several other forest birds here.

You will need to enter these coordinates into your GPS app to locate our meeting point, as there are no true addresses where we are going.

After searching for some of these forest birds, we'll head south along FR88 as a group to more open areas of the forest, where we'll have better luck locating Common Nighthawk and hearing Chuck-will's-widow.

Bring binoculars and a camera if you have them. We will have extra binoculars to lend for the walk. Please wear long pants and comfortable shoes as we will be walking primarily on dirt and sand trails and potentially through tall grass. Additionally, bring bug spray, as we will be birding into and past sunset.

This is a FREE PUBLIC event, so bring a friend! You can join or renew the Marion Audubon Society on our website to access this or other future events.
