What we’re about

This is the Maryland-DC (MDC) Chapter of the Washington Area Secular Humanists (WASH). However, wherever you are in the world, you are welcome to join this group. We have in real life and virtual events we think you would be interested in.

Founded in 1989, WASH is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) educational organization. We believe in the goodness of the humanity without supernaturalism. As a community organization, we are dedicated to promoting free thought and secularism. We welcome atheists, agnostics, humanists, skeptics, and freethinkers to engage in discussions and events centered around these identities and philosophies.

Join us for group discussions and activities that foster critical thinking and support secular humanist values in the Washington, DC area and beyond. Our purpose is to promote scientific literacy, information literacy, and critical thinking, provide a forum for humanists to explore humanist principles, and examine the significance of humanism in the present day.

Secular humanists and other non-religious/non-theistic people emphasize scientific methods of understanding, the separation of church and state, and the pursuit of humanist goals outside religious frameworks. WASH has several active chapters in the region, including the Maryland-DC Chapter (MDC). People who live in Northern Virginia are welcome to belong to the MDC Chapter and attend its events.

WASH is a chapter of the American Humanist Association, and an affiliate of American Atheists. Visit our website to learn more, access our chapter pages, and read our bimonthly newsletter, WASHline:
