New-to-Me Hike: Mason Dixon Trail - Glen Cove to Broad Creek - 7 mi - Moderate
Details
Let’s explore a new-to-me trail along the Susquehanna River just north of Conowingo Dam!
DESCRIPTION (please read carefully):
This is an out-and-back hike of just over 7 miles and with a total elevation gain of about 1400 ft. (AllTrails sometimes underreports the distance - a hiker on Facebook mentioned that she hiked closer to 8 miles with nearly 2000 ft elev gain.)
The route starts at Glen Cove Marina and follows the river all the way to Broad Creek Park. It's a moderately challenging hike with great waterfront views, rewarding elevation changes, and interesting remnants of stone walls/buildings.
Note: This is not a beginner hike due to elevation gain, terrain, and pace. We’ll hike at a brisk pace.
Reviews say that it’s a very rocky trail and that hiking poles are recommended. Please wear sturdy hiking shoes/boots with good traction. Bring plenty of water (at least 2 liters) and tick repellent.
I haven’t hiked this route before - since I’m not yet familiar with the route, I’m limiting the group size to 10 hikers.
Optional drinks/lunch afterward at Hopkins Farm Brewery for Breathe Love Music Festival and food trucks (3833 Rider Lane, Havre de Grace, MD, 21078), or Conowingo Crabs (176 Conowingo Rd, Conowingo, MD 21918), depending on what we feel like!
📍Meeting Place: Glen Cove Marina, Glen Cove Rd and Berkley Rd, Darlington, MD 21034.
Please arrive before 9 am - we'll start no later than 9:05.
Dogs: If you’d like to bring a dog, please mention it in the comments. Only one dog/dog family per hike, please.
Restrooms: There are restrooms available at the marina.
IMPORTANT:
Please remember that you are responsible for your own safety. Hiking is an inherently risky outdoor activity, and while every reasonable precaution is taken to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience, each participant is ultimately responsible for their own well-being.
Please come prepared with adequate water, appropriate footwear, and any necessary medications.
