St. Michael Christian Orthodox Church in Whittier, Ca is pleased to offer a Masterclass in Christian Orthodox Iconography led by Dom Joseph-Marie, a Christian Orthodox Monk specializing in early Roman-era iconography. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn the sacred art of Christian iconography, in an intimate and immersive setting.
The Master Class will offer students - 20 HOURS - of practical, hands-on experience painting / writing icons. The pace will be deliberate. Beginners, intermediate, advanced, and expert students (16 and older) will be personally tutored by Dom Joseph-Marie. The goal is that students will receive the confidence in painting / writing one or more well-prayed icons.
Class Schedule:
Saturdays: January 25 – February 15, 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Wednesdays: January 29 and February 12, 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
Students will have the option to paint/write an icon of Our Lord, or Our Lady and the Holy Child.
Cost:
$200 for all Master Classes (register by January 5)
$350 after January 5
Students are responsible for purchasing necessary supplies (see the list of required supplies below).
All proceeds of the event will be donated to Our Lady and St. Laurence Monastery (Ladyminster) in Canon City, Colorado.

Additional Lectures:
Dom Joseph-Marie will also offer two lectures on the history and theology of iconography. These lectures, on Sunday, February 2 and Sunday, February 16, are included in the cost of the Master Classes. Separate tickets for these lectures are available for $25 each ($25 each after January 5).

Dom Joseph-Marie Brown has been painting icons since 1989. Icons by his hand can be found in England, Russia, Mexico, Australia, Italy, and in North America. Currently he is painting the interior of Ladyminster Monastery, and recently completed St. Michael Orthodox Church in Whittier, California. A documentary of the iconography for St Michael can be viewed on YouTube “Icons of St. Michael.” Other samples of his work can be viewed on Flickr. Dom Joseph-Marie’s primary inspirations remain Gregory Gashev, Archimandrite Zinon, Philip Davidov and Olga Shalamova. Dom Joseph-Marie is an Orthodox Benedictine Schema Monk at Our Lady and St. Laurence Monastery (Ladyminster) in Canon City, Colorado.
