new book kickoff: Elementary Functional Analysis
Details
We are beginning a new book: MacCluer's "Elementary Functional Analysis". We'll discuss some subset of exercises 1-15 in chapter 1. Attendees should solve exercises (2, 3, 7, 8, 13) + 2 other exercises from the above range [choose based on interest] beforehand.
Pre-reqs: linear algebra + 1 semester of real analysis, as well as basics of (metric) topology.
Recommended: measure theory and complex analysis. See the book's Preface for an explanation of why these are recommended but not required.
Digital Copy:
There is a link to the book under "Useful books on Functional Analysis" here: https://math.bme.hu/~pitrik/
(Meetup has issues recognizing the ~ symbol in links so you may need to copy and paste the text into a browser)
Hard Copy:
As of December 16 Springer is running a holiday / year end sale with the hardcover edition selling for $24. This is unlikely to last more than another week or two.
