Recording Audio for Video 101

Great video can be completely ruined by bad audio. This workshop is designed to help you understand how to capture clean, usable sound so your videos feel professional and intentional, not distracting or amateur.

In this hands-on session, we’ll focus on the fundamentals of recording audio for video in real-world situations. We’ll look at different types of microphones and recorders, how to mount and position them, and how to set proper audio levels. You’ll practice working with audio gear in a variety of common scenarios so you can confidently capture sound that matches the quality of your visuals.

You’ll learn:

• Microphone Types – Lavalier, shotgun, and on-camera mics explained
• Recorders & Connections – Camera inputs vs external recorders
• Mic Placement – Where to position microphones for clean sound
• Mounting & Grip – Using stands, booms, clips, and mounts
• Audio Settings – Levels, gain, and avoiding distortion
• Real-World Practice – Recording dialogue, movement, and ambient sound
• Common Problems – Wind noise, handling noise, and bad placement

This workshop is fully hands-on. You’ll work directly with audio gear, test different setups, and hear the differences in real time. Class size is intentionally kept small so everyone has time to practice and ask questions.

By the end of this class, you’ll know how to capture clean audio confidently and avoid the most common mistakes that ruin otherwise great video.
