Something to Believe in… why is that important?
“Approximately 90% of Americans believe in some form of higher power. This includes those who believe in God as described in the Bible (56%) and those who believe in a different higher power or spiritual force (33%). Only about 10% of Americans state they don't believe in any higher power” from a Pew Research Study.
But more and more people have left churches, synagogues and mosques. In 1937 approximately 70% of our US population was affiliated with a faith tradition. Recently that number is less than 50%. There was a mass exodus in the 1990’s decade – over 40 million people stopped attending religious services. This was the largest change in religious attendance in American history.
It appears that people believe in a higher power but practicing a faith tradition with its elements of prayer, gatherings and service to one another does not necessarily correspond. Believing and involvement seem at odds. Is that important?
This question and others will be discussed together based on the guidance provided by various sources of inspiration and the Writings of the Baha’i Faith, the world’s most recent independent religion, a faith whose aim is to help unify humanity. All people are welcome!
“You should, therefore, leave all your affairs in His Hands, place your trust in Him, and rely upon Him. He will assuredly not forsake you.” From the Baha’i Writings
