A worldview is the overall framework of basic beliefs, values, and concepts through which a person interprets the world and interacts with reality.

How you interpret the world and how reality plays are often two different things.

I argue that each person sees the world the same way by will come to different interpretations and conclusions.
No one person can know it all by gathering all sorts of data points in history and come to an objective interpretation.

Here comes the the controversial aspect on worldviews: I believe that some people's worldviews are more wrong than others.
While some can argue that worldviews are all dependent on a person's experience from beliefs, understanding, and concepts; the truth is, some people have a more accurate understanding of the world, people, events.

*******My personal favorite on this subject are the "Chicken Littleism" and the "But This Time Is Different!!!" mindsets.

What I mean is that throughout human human history, people have been saying but this time is different when encountering new technological advancements and or new events.
I'm not saying that nothing changes but people love to espouse the "It's gonna be the end of the world this time!" or "This time humanity will finally reach unification and peace!" talking point, but we're still here as a species yet far from the utopias that some people are hoping for.

So the takeaway is this: the people who have the worldview that revolves it'll be the end of the world or it'll finally be the time that humanity transcends its human nature when this thing or that thing happens, is wrong.
Conversely: the people who view the world and humanity through the peak & valley model by examining historical pattens, tends to be correct.

Questions to ponder:

  • How do you come to your conclusions about anything?
  • How do you know if your worldviews are correct?
  • How do you know if your worldviews are wrong?
  • What can happen to a person or a society that lives by the wrong worldviews?
  • Is it just to correct other people's worldviews?
  • What or who gets to be the arbiter of truth?
  • What are the differences between capital "T" truths & personal truths?
  • What are personal truths and do they exist?

Major controversies of some worldviews currently:

  • Human nature: Is human nature constant or malleable? (How do you arrive at your current conclusion about nature?)
  • Gun/weapons control: Do you believe that we can ban our way to safety?
  • Abortion: When does life began in terms of embryonic development?
  • How do you determine when a life becomes complete?
  • How do you come to the conclusion that abortion is ethical and at what stage of abortion should be considered unethical?
  • Death penalty: Are all people redeemable? If so, or not so, how do you know?
  • Economic/Government Systems: Is Capitalism or Communism better at creating a flourishing society?
  • Which one is more condusive to innovation?
  • Which system offers a fair society?
  • How do you define fairness and is fairness necessarily a good thing?
  • Which system has stood the test of time?
  • The universe & causality: If everything we know must be "created" in one form or another, does that automatically mean the universe itself must have a "creator"?
  • Immigration: Do you believe in nation states?
  • Is a world without borders a good or bad idea?
  • Can all cultures get along?
  • *The classic "But this time is different!" mindset: Do you think humanity has finally reach a point in civilizational development that we can reach world peace for the first time?
  • Have humans finally learned its mistakes from the past? (How can we tell?)
  • Is science finally becoming the best platform for understanding?
  • Are you being realistic about the world and people or are you prone to being risk adverse and seeing the world in a darker light than it really is?

Guidelines:

  • Hand raises are required. There are no limits on how many times you can raise your hand.
  • There will be a 2-3 minute timer for every person depending the size of attendees. However, in this group, I do allow a brief back and fourth interjection from others if it's something that's related to the person who was just speaking. This is a way to prevent the group from feeling too "robotic" in style and get your pressing question asked to the speaker and get the answer right away without waiting all the way back to your turn again.
  • Be authentic & civil!
  • Please refrain from using Ad Hominem (personal) attacks. This includes in voice, in meeting chat, and in the comments section below. Instead, please attack the points from others. Severe Ad Hominem such as racist behavior will result in being removed from the meeting.
  • Zoom link is posted well before the day of the meeting but you will not be able to join until 10 minutes before the meeting start time.
