“Man is, in reality, a spiritual being, and only when he lives in the spirit is he truly happy.” -Abdu’l-Bahá.

What makes us human? This is one of life’s ultimate questions, debated for centuries by philosophers, scientists, and theologians alike.

Scientifically, we are classified as Homo sapiens—literally meaning "wise men." But is it truly our wisdom, biology, or cognitive and linguistic abilities that define us? Or is it found deeper within our cultural structures, social systems, and emotional and moral dimensions? Is being human simply a matter of how we walk, talk, and think, or does our true identity transcend the physical world?

Many spiritual traditions suggest that we are created in the image of a Divine Creator. If that be true and if we are truly called to reflect such an exalted a Being, then our definition of humanity must expand.

“Human beings are members of a whole
In creation of one essence and soul
If one member is afflicted with pain
Other members uneasy will remain
If you have no sympathy for human pain
The name of human you cannot retain” ― Saadi (Persian poet)

Please join us as we reflect together on what truly elevates us as human beings, and how our happiness is deeply connected to that understanding. This discussion will be based on quotes from the Baha’i Writings, and all respectfully shared views are welcome, regardless of background or belief."
