Freedom: illusion or reality?

Freedom is one of our highest aspirations. But what is it and how do we know if we have it? The Greek playwright, Euripides, put it this way in 450 BC: "No one is truly free; they are a slave to wealth, fortune, the law, or other people restraining them from acting according to their will."

Is he too pessimistic? Can we be truly free? If so, how?
