This day in history, the Nikini (August) full moon, recalls the convocation of 500 monks that gathered, 3 months after the Buddha passed away, to codify his teachings. This moon day also marks the start of the 2nd month of Vassa (the monks' annual 3 months of continuous residency during east India's monsoon season).

Anyone taking 8 precepts for the day - as the Buddha encouraged doing - please arrive by 8:45 am wearing all or mostly white clothing. For a nice explanation of the 8 precepts, see this link: http://en.dhammadana.org/dhamma/practice/8_precepts.htm (list is at the end)
