Dear Orlando meditators and fans of the philosophy and meditational techniques of the Buddha,
Now if you are really serious about learning to meditate in a qualified Buddhist manner, then consider coming to the Tantric Buddhist Empowerment this Saturday at Vajrapani Kadampa Buddhist Center. This special event doesn't come around very often, but if you take this "journey" a whole new world will open up. You may be familiar with the mantra Om Mani Padme Hum. Well here you receive the transmission and teachings on it.
You are welcomed to attend this blissful meditation and teachings. It is a beautiful all day event (9 AM to 4:30 PM, cost: $50 Saturday only, includes Vegetarian lunch) and there is a follow up practice on Sunday that is optional but well worth it to enhance the teachings. For more info go to MeditationInOrlando.org
It is most appreciated if you can RSVP through them instead of here, but if you RSVP here, please also RSVP there.
Go without preparing or studying up on the terms Tantra and Empowerment, etc. But if you like you can skim over the definitions below. The most important thing is to have the attitude of a mind that desires to awaken and to help others find peace of an awakened mind. So expect to have a joyous meditation. Also expect a delicious vegetarian meal for the lunch break.
Now what is Tantric Buddhism? And what is a Tantric Buddhist Empowerment? Well anything Tantric means it has to do with Tantra. Now there is Hindu Tantra and Buddhist Tantra, so here we are interested, of course, in Buddhist Tantra, and Tantric Buddhism. So here simply saying Tantric or Tantra will relate to the Buddhist kind of Tantra. A way of referring to this class of Buddhism is to say Tantrayana, alternatively, Vajrayana. The whole set of practices can be called Tantra or Secret Mantra.
Now what is Tantra? I had to grab it from a glossary put together at the website BerzinArchives.comTantra:
(1) An everlasting stream of continuity. On the causal level, the mental continuum, with its various aspects of Buddha-nature. On the pathway level, the continuity of practices involving Buddha-figures. On the resultant level, the continuity of the various corpuses or bodies of a Buddha. (2) The texts that discuss the above topics.
So what we are interested here is [on the pathway level] the continuity of practices involving Buddha-figures. What does Buddha figure mean? Buddha Figure:
An emanated form of a Buddha, often with multiple faces, arms, and legs, which tantric practitioners visualize themselves as. This is done in order to create a close bond with the figure so as to be able to attain enlightenment, in the form of that figure, through such practice.
And now what is an Empowerment?Empowerment:
A tantric ritual that activates and empowers Buddha-nature factors to grow so that, through repeated, sustained tantric practice, they will eventually transform into the Three Corpuses (Bodies) of a Buddha. An empowerment also plants new seeds, or potentials, that will likewise grow in the same manner. The term is often translated as "initiation."
So in this Tantric Empowerment being offered here in Orlando you will learn to meditate on a Buddha Figure that symbolizes [and becomes] Compassion. This Buddha is called Avalokiteshvara (in Sanskrit) and Chenrezig (in Tibetan.) The Buddha Figure has 1000 arms which means that there is going to be 1000 Buddhas (in the flesh) sent to help us. Already since the beginning of this earth at least four have been sent, including the most famous one, the Shakyamuni Buddha (birth named Siddhartha Gotama, a prince of India) who started the Buddhist teachings we have today.
As it says in the official website for this empowerment [at www.MeditationInOrlando.org]
After the empowerment on Saturday, and in a special (optional) session on Sunday, Ricc [the Resident Teacher who is qualified to give the empowerment and the teachings] will give commentary on The Yoga of Thousand-armed Avalokiteshvara. The benefits of practicing this yoga are immeasurable. We will receive the special blessings of Buddha continually, which are especially powerful for pacifying our anger, desirous attachment and hatred. We therby experience inner peace, a peaceful mind, all the time. Because of this we will be happy all the time. This is what we really want. This Yoga is also a special method for improving our experience of love, compassion, and bodhichitta.
So I am going to be there and I hope to see you there.
Compassion and Om Mani Padme Hum,
