Modern! A spotters guide to Modernist Architecture in London
Details
Join me for a Sunday stroll...
Modern architecture emerged at the end of the 19th century from revolutions in technology, engineering, and building materials, and from a desire to break away from historical architectural styles and invent something that was purely functional and new.
Key architects: Frank Lloyd Wright, Le Corbusier, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Richard Neutra
Otto Wagner, in Vienna, was another pioneer of the new style. In his book Moderne Architektur (1895) he had called for a more rationalist style of architecture, based on "modern life”.
London has some excellent examples ans we shall start off on the South Bank - meandering through the city and finish up near King's Cross - noting some of the Modernist Buildings enroute.
Wear comfortable shoes, carry water, cross roads and streets with caustion. The walk is about 4 miles long.
Finish at a pub for drinks and food (optional) and a chat.
Meet up point is outside the Hole in Wall pub.
