Starting at the Boone Fork parking area and following the trail towards Grandfather Mountain, hikers will come across many overlooks, including Calloway Peak, on their way to the summit ridge of Grandfather Mountain. The trail offers a stunning variety of scenery, passing through wind-dwarfed spruce and fir, across rock walls and pinnacles, and into open spaces with mountain views in every direction. This trail was where explorer and botanist Andre Michaux broke into song two centuries ago, believing he had reached the highest point in North America. The pace is often slow, with hand-over-hand progress required in some chutes and extra steep sections where hikers use in-place cables and ladders. For those who prefer to avoid the ladders up MacRae Peak, the more sheltered Underwood Trail is a great alternative. This trail is not recommended for inexperienced hikers, children, or pets. There are many beautiful overlooks of the Blue Ridge Parkway along the way, with Attic Window Peak being a popular spot to stop and take in the views.
