Darmstadt Sightseeing (Luisenplatz-Schloß-Mathildenhöhe-Oberfeld)

Details
The Walk
We will meet in the main train station at the DB Reisezentrum and head out for Darmstadt central square (Luisenplatz) using public transport. From there we walk towards the city castle and pass the old opera as well as the University. Then we walk along the conference center (Darmstadtium) through the old prison gateway to Mathildenhöhe. There we will see the cities most prominent landmark (Fünffingerturm), what Jugendstil (art nouveau) is and several other interesting historic buildings. This place is actually an UNESCO world heritage site. Here we can also take a rest and get some snacks. To be on the safe side bring food and water with you - at least 1 L water or equivalent drink. After that we head over to a large park called Rosenhöhe which also houses the family tomb of the former monarchs of Darmstadt. Besides the nicely designed landscape there is also a giant redwood tree, which I always like to have a look at when I am around this place. Then we continue to a directly connected park called Oberfeld. Our turn around point is an old farm house (Hofgut), where more snacks can be bought. On our way back to where we have started our hike initially we will also pass the Woog, which is the local natural swimming pool.
The total distance of the hike is 10 Kilometers. If you plan to join, be on time for the hike, as we cannot afford to wait for more than 3-5 minutes before starting. The group will NOT wait for those arriving late.
General:
It is recommended
- to wear clothes and footwear suitable for hiking
- to have enough water to drink.
- that you do your best to stay with the group and not to fall too far behind. We will take 1-minute breaks to catch our breath when necessary, but generally speaking, do not get too lost in your conversations to make you fall behind too much. It is your responsibility to stay with the group.
No-shows:
If you are not going to join the hike - or are not sure of it - please remove yourself from the participants' list to make way for the people on the waiting list. Please do so as soon as you can and also by no later than 5pm the day before the event, as enough time should be provided for people on the waiting list to be informed and for them to plan/replan their evening and the next day for the hike.
Failing to remove yourself from the participants' list in time or being a NO-SHOW will result in it being more difficult for you to join future hikes as your participation will be deprioritised below other participants who followed this guidance. Thank you for understanding this and being considerate and respectful of others.
Weather:
If there will be rain forecasted, the hike will be cancelled. A confirmation of this hike will be sent here in the comments one day before.
Disclaimer:
Please be aware of your surroundings and keep yourself safe during the hike. You take full responsibility for your own safety during the hike. The organizer is not a professional hike leader.

As this is a group event, you acknowledge that you might be on photos where you are not the main motive.
