What we’re about
This group is for anyone who has always wanted to take art lessons and finally decided to do so. After working in schools for the past 30 years, and with my new Diploma of Art Therapy, I have developed a unique teaching system that is more than just learning skills. I know the health benefits of living a creative life. I help people develop their creative side so they can use art-making to learn, grow, heal, make friends and find enjoyment.
In 2009, my husband of 22 years, lost his battle with Depression. My life was turned upside down in an instant! Art became invaluable to me while I grieved and by 2016 I was ready to launch Studio Yellow. I now share what I've learned personally (and professionally) with others because I really believe Art helps to make life worth living.
While everyone is welcome, I started Studio yellow to reach out to adults who feel they really need to start 'ART' from the very beginning. My classes combine everything I know about art materials and techniques with everything I have learnt about fostering creativity from the 100s of students I have taught during my career. As a fully qualified, registered Art teacher, I make every class relaxed and informative so you will learn how to enjoy the creative process in a completely non-judgemental atmosphere. With lots of personal attention, absolute beginners feel particularly supported.
You will meet people who have always had art in their heart, but have had little or no opportunity to learn how to do it. I also run sessions for those with some Art experience who are looking to reignite their confidence or work in a collaborative art space. Our members also meet up socially at Galleries and Exhibition openings and anywhere else that takes our fancy.
My classes are held in Manly West on Brisbane's beautiful bayside on weekdays and Saturdays !! I also offer Corporate workshops such as my '5 Steps to unlock Positive, Proactive and Productive teams'. A full list of classes and workshops are listed on my website (www.studioyellow.com.au).
I love changing lives for the better, through Art as I truly believe all Art is therapy. I urge you to nurture your mental health forever by starting a healthy hobby today!
I look forward to meeting you soon, Natalie

See all- Acrylic Painting Techniques for BeginnersManly West, Manly WestA$150.00
If you ever wanted to paint a canvas-like “real” Artists do, but don’t know where to start, this workshop is your dream come true. Even if you can’t remember ever holding a paintbrush before, you will quickly feel at ease when you’re shown my tried and tested techniques, using acrylic paints and a range of mediums and additives. You will have the opportunity to learn about and experiment with the materials, so you can discover the effects you like the most, before using them to create abstract or semi-abstract artwork on a canvas. You’ll be guided and supported a little or a lot depending on your wishes, with honest advice and feedback.
This workshop teaches traditional and non-traditional ways to apply paint and encourages you to think outside the box. I provide plenty of fuel to develop your confidence and creativity, with actual demonstrations and lots of examples. - Handmade paper-makingManly West, Manly WestA$118.00
Create Unique, Textured Paper for Your Art Projects
Handmade paper is more than just fun to make. It’s an amazing process that allows you to add depth and character to your paper-based art projects. Why use mass-produced blank paper when you can upcycle raw materials to create paper with unique qualities and one-of-a-kind textures?
By the end of this hands-on workshop, you will have made multiple pages, that you can take home and use for all kinds of projects including painting, drawing, printmaking, and mixed-media artworks. Plus, you will have the know-how to make many more pages with instructions included on how to create your own papermaking deckle and mould.
Embrace Your Creative Freedom, as you:
- Learn how to make paper out of a variety of natural and man-made materials.
- Experiment with the colour, thickness, and texture of each page you make.
- Discover ways to ‘prepare’ your paper for use with different art media, and be inspired to create handmade greeting cards, bookmarks, hanging ornaments, and stationery (after your paper has had time to dry).
- Admire what you have made, possibly deciding to frame the most interesting piece (as is), allowing the paper to tell its unique story.
Papermaking is a creative skill that makes your art hobby more affordable and less wasteful. You’ll be able to repurpose all the wastepaper scraps from your studio (or office) and transform them into something beautiful.
The possibilities are endless.

Not open - Little Books – Handmade Journals, Zines, and MoreManly West, Manly WestA$118.00
Making a little book by hand is an enriching and rewarding experience because you can add your unique personality and style to each one. Like all art projects, the ‘process’ makes it deeply therapeutic, helping to reduce stress, enhance mindfulness, and provide a sense of accomplishment.
In this workshop, you will learn how to make two different types of miniature ‘Artist Books’ using mixed-media techniques as well as drawing, painting, and collage skills.
You’ll be given structure and guidance, as well as the freedom to experiment and grow as an artist (if you prefer), as you create something that is both beautiful and meaningful.
Once created, the pages of your book can hold many secrets so you will also be shown how to fill the pages and make the contents (the subject matter) either fun and whimsical or deeply personal, the choice will be yours.
By the end of the session, you’ll have the know-how and confidence to make many more ‘little books’ to record your thoughts and feelings about moments in your life (or gift to your friends and family). These books could also be filled with sketches, photographs, and other memorabilia that hold sentimental value.
You’ll discover the time invested in making these ‘little books’ takes ‘Art Journalling’ to a whole new level as they will be cherished forever.
By the way, a ‘ZINE’ is essentially a small self-published magazine filled with words and images, and they can be made about any subject you are interested in! Please note, that this workshop is very different from the ‘Little Books – Mixed Media Keepsake (pocketbooks)’ workshop.
What’s included:
- A complete ‘mixed-media’ learning experience.
- Step-by-step instructions.
- Organisational ideas and advice on resources you need to set up your home studio.
- Tea/coffee and light snacks.
- An apron for use on the day.
- Quality art materials.
- Your very own little books to take home.
- Relaxing Music.
- Lots of photos as you work, that I will share with you upon request.
- Clean up – it’s all taken care of for you.
