Welcome my fellow bookworms! Our priority in this book club is to read broadly and thoughtfully and discuss our thoughts and insights together with mutual respect. Anyone who wants to read anything and everything, and especially wants to prioritize marginalized voices in our quest for greater understanding in a beautiful, crazy world should check us out. This group will read anything from pop science to historical romance to Afrofuturism to high fantasy to contemporary fiction to biographies to political analyses.
I am a White woman who reads broadly and who wants to create space for White folx to learn together how to effectively be in solidarity with Black, brown and Indigenous people of color, trans people, queer people and differently-abled people. Non-black Latinx, Asian, Middle Eastern and a multitude of other marginalized voices will also be prioritized. Black and Indigenous folx and other people of color are unequivocally welcome. Trans folx are welcome. Queer folx are welcome. Neurodivergent folx are welcome. Differently-abled people are welcome and can be accommodated.
During the pandemic, we might need to keep our meetings to a small number and hold them in outdoor spaces in the East Bay, specifically Oakland. Another option is to hold them over Zoom to accommodate larger numbers and any immunocompromised folx. Once health officials give us the go-ahead to meet in large groups in enclosed spaces and share food (!!!), we will have monthly or bi-monthly potlucks where we discuss the book together, again in Oakland or elsewhere in the East Bay. Also, if you didn't read the book or didn't make it all the way through, we'd still love for you to join in!
