What we're about

Whether you’re called by a whisper or driven by a passion deep down in your bones, your desire to write is sacred. Honor it.

Writing with Friends is a supportive space for writers to come together and meet each other in the creative process. Writing can feel lonely at times, especially these days. Join a growing community of writers connecting with writers for support, encouragement and accountability.

Brain science shows criticism shuts down creativity. When giving feedback we focus on the strengths of the work. What do you like best about the writing? What are your favorite phrases? What thrills you? What moves you? This isn’t about blowing smoke or making up nice things to say. It’s about training ourselves to listen differently in a culture that thrives on criticism. We find what works. As we listen for the strengths in others’ writing our own writing grows.

All levels and all types of writing welcome. Fiction, non-fiction, fantasy, poetry, journaling, screenplay, blogs, essays -- or come with a blank slate and no idea what you want to write and see where words take you.

Come share the journey! We honor our writing, honor the each other and honor ourselves.

Brain science shows criticism shuts down creativity. For this generative group our feedback will be focused on the strengths in the work. What did you like best about the writing? All levels and all types of writing welcome. Fiction, non-fiction, poetry, journaling, screenplays, blogs, essays or a blank slate and no idea what you want to write and see where words take you.

10:00 – 10:15 • Intros and socializing. A relaxed atmosphere to check in, talk about what you’re working on and how your writing went over the past week. No disclaimers when it comes time to read so get them all out of the way now.

10:15 – 11:00 • 45 minutes of ACTUAL WRITING. Bask in the creative energy of other writers creating alongside you.

11:00 – 12:30 • Five minute readings with feedback on what we loved. Everyone who wants to share what they’ve written will get a chance to read. Share what you wrote DURING our session.

Feedback Process:

READING:
- The focus is on reading what we generate in this session – not a polished piece
- Give a couple of sentences about what you wrote (but no disclaimers!)

COMMENTING:
- We feed back to the strengths of the piece. What moved us, stood out to us, what touched us.
- Jot down phrases or lines that you liked. Specifics are good.
- Support each other by giving feedback.
-
RECEIVING FEEDBACK:
- Just listen. No commenting or distractions. Relax and soak it all in.

Come share the journey! We honor our writing, honor the each other and honor ourselves.

This is a video-on group. Given the intimate nature of this group we ask that your video be on during the intros and the sharing portion of the group.
