What we're about

ThoughtWorks is a software consultancy - and a community of passionate, purpose-led individuals. We have one mission: We think disruptively to deliver technology to address our clients' toughest challenges, all while seeking to revolutionize the IT industry and create positive social change.

We are intentional about making technology a better place for all. ThoughtWorkers are encouraged to stand up, speak up, and advocate for who and what they believe in. We host events and talks tackling intersectionality, discrimination and bias in tech because we believe conversations create understanding and diversity in organizations and thinking.

Here you are free to learn and to share on any platform. Free to feel safe in your own skin. Free to follow your latest curiosity to an unknown place. Free to challenge ideas, assumptions, and solutions - no matter who they belong to (respectfully). Free to experiment and recommend the right tech without bias. Free to change career paths. Free to make technology a better place for all.

We like to share our knowledge and would like to invite you to become part of this meetup group to stay up to date with our latest events - you don't have to be a ThoughtWorker to join this community :)

Agile in the Enterprise - Change your company bottom up

Haus der Wirtschaft

About: At every conference, there’s a never-ending stream of speakers giving insights about agile, DevOps and how business, development and operations are finally celebrating eternal success - but your company still paddles down the waterfall? Feels familiar? Imagine you could change that! I want to take you on a short journey with me, about successful bottom-up transformations I have seen and initiated myself. I’d like to show you: * how you will be able to help your team to become more agile * how you can change your immediate surroundings * and finally your whole department and company. We will take a sneak peek into some tools and patterns that can help you on this road, to finally achieve what has become more common in the past years - a transformation of an enterprise, bottom up. After the talk, there will be some games and tools set up that you can play and take as input for your own transformation. Agenda: 6:30pm - Get together 7:00pm - Talk and Q&A 8:30pm - 10:00pm - Networking and Fearless Journey Gamenight Our facilitator for this event is Matthias Kainer: Matthias was a co-founder of two web companies, worked at Microsoft, AutoScout24, and 1&1 as Developer, Business Engineer and Manager before he joined ThoughtWorks as Consultant. His main interests Continuous Delivery, DevOps, software development, agile and self-organized teams he tried to bring in at each of those companies - not always successful but never without learning something new.

Java to Kotlin: The basics and our journey to production

Haus der Wirtschaft

There will be two talks this evening: (1) "Less is more: transitioning from Java to Kotlin"" by Cristian Benedit Kotlin has several advantages over Java. Is this true? And if so, what are the advantages and how can my team benefit from them? We plan to cover all the cool, and not so cool stuff involved in moving from Java to Kotlin. The syntax, the learning curve, the possibility of living with both, at least for some time, the tools and when does it make sense to start with the transition (2) "What we learnt building a microservice in Kotlin" by Mario Fernandez Kotlin promises to be a concise and safe language with an easy transition from Java. We wanted to see how that looked in practice, so we wrote our latest microservice in it. I want to talk about how that worked for us and what we learnt on the way (SPOILER: we like it a lot) AGENDA: 6:30pm - Get together 7:00pm - Talks 8:00pm - Discussion, Networking and Drinks ABOUT OUR SPEAKERS: Cristian is a software developer, who believes that software is a lot more about people than it is about technology. He fights the dragon of accidental complexity every day with his favourite weapon of choice, design. He also enjoys pairing and practicing tdd. He never deals in absolutes, only siths do that. Mario develops software for a living. Then he goes home and continues reading about software, because he just cannot get enough. At some point somebody thought it was a good idea to make him the technical lead of an agile team. He quickly discovered that building things himself is not the same as helping somebody else figure it out. He learned, somewhat to his surprise, that he really enjoys sharing ideas. According to their feedback, other developers have managed to learn something from Mario. At least they don't tend to run away screaming, which is, as he thinks, a good thing.
