In our increasingly complex world, knowing a little about a lot not only grounds our own interests within all spheres of knowledge, but helps us foster the holistic thinking that will illuminate our questions with innovative and unique points of view. At the SciArt Book Club, we aim to cover a variety of big topics through short texts - specifically, through Oxford's Very Short Introduction series, which provide concise yet comprehensive introductions to some of today's most scientifically and socially vital topics.

Why are dreams so bizarre? What is the purpose of dreaming? In this text, J. Allan Hobson reveals how dreaming maintains and develops the mind, why we go crazy in our dreams in order to avoid doing so when awake, and why sleep and dreaming are essential to life.

The SciArt Book Club meets every 5-6 weeks on Wednesdays, 6:30-8:30pm. Each session is hosted by Paul Poggiali and features two other club members as discussion leaders. At the end of each meeting, the members who are present decide upon the text for the next meeting. While it is not necessary to have read the text, attendees are strongly encouraged to do so in order to participate more knowledgeably and dynamically.

All book club meetings are free and open to the public, but please be sure to RSVP so we know you're coming.
