How Agile has been scaled in a large complex organisation

Details

Description:
The event will consist of 3 lightning talks from 3 different organisations plus a panel session. Each talk will tell the story of how Agile has been scaled in a large complex organisation: the successes, failures and lessons learned worth sharing across the community. There will then be a Q&A panel session, where experts from the field will answer questions (panel will include speakers from the lightning talks, as well as SAFe SPCTs).

Audience:
The event is aimed at people who work with large complex organisations adopting Agile

HSBC will be ‘sponsoring’ the event, and providing pizzas
We will begin at 6:30 – please try to make it in good time (to ensure you can sign in at reception and get up to Floor 1 for the event)

Pre-registration (via meet-up.com) is mandatory so we can put your name on the security guest-list
The event is aimed at people who work with large complex organisations adopting Agile.

HSBC
HSBC is a huge and complex organisation: there are many examples of team-level agility, however our adoption of “agile at scale” is relatively recent. SAFe has been used as a framework in a number of different areas, and its implementation looks/feels different in each of them. I would like to share two contrasting “release train launch” stories highlighting patterns that can make or break programme agility.

Andy Hughes
Andy is an “enterprise agility coach” at HSBC.

First Direct
first direct has been on a significant transformation journey over the last few years, with large-scale improvements being made to customer, financial and people outcomes.
As the volume of organisational and process changes increased we looked for a more effective way of delivering change, and in April 2018 trialled the deployment of scaled agile principles against the backdrop of our specific business context.
On a day to day basis, each of first direct’s business units work closely with their own Agile Release Train to prioritise, design, plan and deliver change with our scrum teams involving many more of our front line people in prioritising, defining solutions, sharing progress and delivering these changes.

Dylan Morris
Dylan is a Release Train Engineer (RTE) for both the Mortgage and Onboarding Agile Release Trains in first direct.

Alex Gold
Alex is the Chief of Staff and LACE Product Owner at first direct.

Hastings Direct
Once upon a time we finished a large transformation project with a system integrator and went to sleep very proud of ourselves (trust me we needed the sleep!).
We then woke up and realised we had an even bigger challenge in front of us. How should we assemble and orchestrate ourselves to manage and enhance what we had delivered.
This is the story of how we transitioned from where we were, to where we are today - and what we plan to do next. Oh and how SAFe guided us, and continues to help us….
My aim is to share the successes we had, laugh at the despair we suffered at times, and start a dialogue with you all on helping refine our next steps…

Andy Turrall
Andy is a failed developer, who has since moved into IT management and leadership.

Expert Panel
This is an interactive panel session, and an opportunity for the audience/presenters/SPCTs to discuss hot topics around “agile at scale”. Questions will be taken from the audience: we’ll focus on the topics you want to hear about… so please come prepared to participate in this facilitated Q&A session.
