Morning speaker: "Bringing History to Life Through Fiction."
Pam De Voe will discuss the balance between accuracy and creativity when you, as an author, must first discern which historical and cultural elements are critical to your writing and, second, how to find them in the rich treasure troves available to us for research. In January's discussion, P. A, De Voe will break down the process and show you how to prepare your story when writing about another country, culture, and time period, avoiding errors of stereotyping and cultural appropriation.
Biography: Dr. De Voe writes contemporary cozy mysteries and international, historical mysteries set in China's Ming Dynasty. Her novel Trapped was nominated for the 2017 Agatha Award for Best Middle Grade/Young Adult Book. Her book Warned won the 2016 Silver Falchion Award for Best International Fiction.

Afternoon speaker: Jane Ryder of Big Kahuna, Ryder Author Resources
Jane has been a writer all her life and has worked with books and authors in various capacities for almost as long — as a typist, proofreader, librarian, editor, project manager, consultant, and occasional therapist. She started Ryder Author Resources in 2016, after eight years running the office of an editorial services company, where she learned how to do a little bit of everything. Since then she’s learned even more about book production, promotion, marketing, social media, and website design, among other things. Her goal is always to help authors in whatever ways they need, from occasional email blasts to monthly social media management, and to keep them informed on best practices in the publishing industry. She’s an outgoing introvert, which means she loves making connections with people but needs to balance it with large amounts of alone time (books don’t count as company).
