Gather ‘round for an evening of informed and informal talks from a friendly neighborhood expert! We’ll have three speakers, each presenting on a different topic and sharing interesting facts that you never knew you never knew! Past Nerd Nite speakers have led deep dives into topics from the legacy of Louis Pasteur, to the origin of elements, to how a trumpet works, to a dissection of romance novel tropes. So bring a friend, grab a drink, and enjoy an evening among fellow nerds. Be there and be square!
SPEAKERS
Can we predict the behavior of fluids? Fluids are essential for many applications, including transportation, energy, weather, and biology, and predicting fluid behavior can help us design and manage these systems. Bjorn will introduce the equations of fluid dynamics and show examples of how they can be applied to theory, experiments, and simulations. Come ready to participate in interactive questions like how a wing produces lift!
Bjorn Kierulf is a PhD candidate in Mechanical Engineering, studying adaptive and mixed-precision methods for simulating turbulent flows.
It’s time to learn Why You Should Care about the WNBA. If you love basketball, the WNBA has something for you, and if you don’t care about basketball, the WNBA still has something for you! Come learn about the relationship drama, union organizing, fashion, and political activism that make this league shine!
Evelyn Hollenshead is a hobby aficionado with a side career as a librarian. She’s a garment sewist, cut flower gardener, ice cream maker, and most recently, aspiring beekeeper.
He’s Got the Whole World in His Mouth: The Complicated History of George Washington’s Dentures. George Washington did not have wooden teeth. Instead, the story of Washington’s dentures is far more complicated (and at times uncomfortable). Come explore why and how Washington gathered materials—including human teeth —from around the world to create his signature look, which became deeply ingrained in what it means to “look” American.
Lucy Smith is a PhD candidate in the joint History and Women’s and Gender Studies program at the University of Michigan. Prior to graduate school, she worked for over a decade in museum education, most recently as the Educational Specialist at George Washington’s Mount Vernon. When not talking about teeth, you can find Lucy at the Farmer’s Market, canning local food in the kitchen, or watching B-movies with friends.
