Canyon Lake Birding
Details
Canyon Lake (on the road to Tortilla Flats) has been the scene of some rare bird sightings recently, so I am scheduling a short-notice event to see if we can find them! A long-tailed duck has been present this week, along with a number of grebes: Western, Clarks, pied-billed, eared, and horned. We'll spend an hour or two trying to locate them in the water near the Acacia Recreational area, which is adjacent to the Canyon Lake parking area. It's a long drive out there, so we'll plan on meeting around 9am in the parking lot.
The only restaurant nearby is at Tortilla Flats, so I'll leave open the option of going there for lunch afterwards, if anyone is interested. For those members who have already expressed interest in this event, please sign up for this meetup to give me a rough idea who will be there. Thanks!
DIRECTIONS: I am having trouble getting the map to show the right location, so if it shows the location in Scottsdale, ignore it! Drive out to Apache Junction and take the Apache Trail (Highway 88) towards Tortilla Flats. It's about 30 miles of scenic and winding road until you reach the lake. As you get close, you'll drop down to the lake and cross a narrow bridge; the parking area and Acacia Rec area is on your left shortly after the bridge.
