Details

Please read this carefully. This is not a straight forward walk!
You will need to be confident on your feet and be a little adventurous to enjoy walk.
Sunday 21st of September is one off the lowest tides of the year. And we are going to visit a beach which is only accessible by land on a few days each year via several sea caves. Low tide is around midday. The walk is not lengthy but once we get to the coast most of the walking will be across the rocks and will include some simple scrambling, (use of hands in order to proceed), in at least one spot. We may also have to paddle a little, so come prepared! Appropriate footwear is a must and be prepared to get wet. a change of cloths may be helpful. Once we reach the beach we should have a couple of hours before the tide returns. Some may like to do a little snorkeling as there are lush seaweed growths here at this time of year and in September the water is as warm as it gets in dear old England.
Whilst we’re walking we may sample a few edible plants along the way, including some seaweeds. The plants found higher up the beach are more palatable in my opinion. Usually semi-succulent and ready salted. The coast is also a good spot to find edible agaric mushrooms, but we’ll need some proper rain before they’ll pop up.
Clearly this walk is weather dependent. Wet rocks are very slippery. If its a little soggy on the day we’ll opt for a coast path walk instead. If it’s pissing down we’ll forget it altogether.
To round the day off we’ll be paying a visit to The Journeys End in Ringmore. This is one of my favourite pubs, Old, quirky and one of the best places to eat in south Devon. Mind Your Head.
Please don’t join this walk if you are not comfortable about walking across the rocks. There’s no age limit, I’m over sixty, but you will need to be fairly agile, have a sense of adventure and be confident walking on uneven ground. If this sounds like a good day out to you. I’ll see you on Sunday 21st. At your own risk!
Advisory note:
This is a not for profit group intended as a social event for people who share an interest in the natural world. You are responsible for your own safety and welfare so please come appropriately dressed for a rural walk taking account of the prevailing weather conditions. Should you participate in any foraging events, it is your own responsibility to identify to your own satisfaction anything you plan to eat. Some walks may involve an additional degree of physical challenge. If so, this will be clearly stated in the description. If you then choose to participate in these activities you do so at your risk.
There is a small fee of £2 for each walk to cover costs of the meetup page which is currently around £320 per year and also to cover some minor expenses incurred when reconnoitering walks, mostly fuel and a pint.
