This is a fantastic walk for both nature and history lovers as it takes in beautiful scenery as well as local history.

We will start in the village of Widecombe with its church know as the Cathedral of the Moors due to its extra tall tower. From here, we will follow a steep climb out of the village and onto the rugged terrain of the moors. We will traverse the undulating terrain to the east, skirt the slopes of a few tors before reaching the Bronze Age settlement of Grimspound. This is a historical site with the remains of ancient longhouses surrounded by a circular stone boundary wall dating from the late Bronze Age (about 1450–700 BC). We will continue along the hilly terrain before dropping down off the moors and circling back to the village along a couple of windy lanes.

The walk is around 18km with a few steep but short ascents and descents. Please wear warm clothes and sturdy boots suitable for rough terrain.

There will be no lunch break on the walk but we will stop at the Café on the Green afterwards for coffee and cake in front of the fire. You can of course bring snacks and refreshments to eat on the way round or have brunch at the café beforehand.

Dogs and guests welcome!

Advisory note:

This is a not for profit group intended as a social event for people who share an interest in the natural world. You are responsible for your own safety and welfare so please come appropriately dressed for a rural walk taking account of the prevailing weather conditions. Some walks may involve an additional degree of physical challenge. If so, this will be clearly stated in the description. If you then choose to participate in these activities you do so at your risk.

There is a small fee of £2 for each walk to cover costs of the meetup page which is currently around £300 per year and also to cover some minor expenses incurred when reconnoitring walks, mostly fuel and a pint.
