A Pathway Toward Wholeness, Transformation, and Inner Wisdom
Grof® holotropic breathwork is a powerful method of self-exploration, emotional release, and personal transformation developed by Dr. Stanislav Grof and Christina Grof. This experiential modality is grounded in the belief that each of us holds an innate inner healing intelligence—a wisdom that, when accessed in a safe and supportive environment, can guide us toward profound insight, integration, and wholeness.
The term holotropic comes from the Greek words holos (whole) and trepein (to move toward), meaning “moving toward wholeness.” Through this process, individuals are invited to journey beyond the limits of ordinary consciousness into deeper layers of their psyche, body, and soul.

Theoretical Framework
Grof® holotropic breathwork is rooted in decades of clinical and consciousness research and draws from:

  • Transpersonal and depth psychology
  • Psychedelic therapy and consciousness studies
  • Anthropology and shamanic traditions
  • Eastern spiritual practices and mystical systems

It offers a comprehensive map of the psyche, which includes not only biographical experiences, but also perinatal(birth-related) and transpersonal (beyond the personal ego) dimensions—realms that include archetypes, collective symbols, and spiritual or mystical experiences.

The Breathwork Process
The process combines:

  • Conscious, accelerated breathing
  • Evocative music
  • Psycho- somatic releases
  • A safe, intentional setting

With eyes closed and lying on a mat, each participant uses their breath and the music to enter a non-ordinary state of consciousness. In this state, the psyche activates its own healing process, bringing forth a unique sequence of experiences—emotional, somatic, psychological, and spiritual.
Each session is guided from within, and no two journeys are ever the same.

Breathers and Sitters
Grof® holotropic breathwork is typically conducted in group settings. Participants work in pairs, alternating roles as:

  • Breathers, who journey inward
  • Sitters, who provide silent, non-intrusive support

The space is held by certified Grof® facilitators, trained through Grof Transpersonal Training (GTT), who offer support only when needed, allowing the breather’s inner process to unfold organically.
Additional elements include focused bodywork, mandala drawing, and verbal integration, helping to ground and make meaning of the experience.

A Unique Therapeutic Landscape
One of the defining aspects of Grof® holotropic breathwork is its expanded cartography of the psyche, described by Grof as including:

  • Biographical content from one’s life history
  • Perinatal experiences, including stages of birth
  • Transpersonal realms, such as archetypal encounters, ancestral memories, and spiritual awakenings

This breadth allows access to deep levels of healing that traditional therapeutic approaches may not reach—making it a profound tool for personal growth, trauma resolution, and spiritual development.
Grof® holotropic breathwork is not about fixing what is broken.

It is about trusting what is wise, whole, and waiting to be remembered within you.
Only those certified through Grof Transpersonal Training (GTT) are authorized to facilitate Holotropic Breathwork®, in alignment with the Principles and Ethical Agreements established by Stanislav and Christina Grof.
