THE HANNA RAPPEL CHALLENGE CONSISTS OF 4 VERY DIFFERENT AND DIFFICULT RAPPELS. You must be competent at rappelling and class 4+ scrambling.
YOU MUST BE A MEMBER Of DESERT SOUTHWEST ADVENTURES AND SIGN UP FOR THE HIKE.
THIS IS NOT A PRACTICE OR TEACHING EVENT.
WHEN YOU HAVE COMPLETED THE 4 RAPS WITH ME OR ANOTHER ORGANIZER THAT KNOWS THE ROUTES, CAN SAFELY LEAD, AND POSTS ON DESERT SOUTHWEST ADVENTURES OR VEGAS HIKERS ,YOU WILL BE AWARDED A NUMBERED CHALLENGE COIN.
THE HIKES ARE;
- Kraft Class 4 climb up 3 rappels down.
- Calico Cave Rap Route.
- Ice Box Waterfall.
- Boyscout Canyon.
WE WILL BE DOING THE QUICK-OUT ROUTE WITH NO WATER CROSSING.
We will meet at Railroad Pass Casino at 0900.
We will leave Railroad Pass Casino at 0900.
We will meet outside the CASINO near the sign on the freeway side. I am driving a blue Rubicon.
If a lot of folks want to go we will need more 4wd vehicles.
Boyscout Canyon is located on the NV side of the Colorado River. The majority of the canyon consists of hiking but the technical section contains a 340' rappel. You should be comfortable with adjusting friction while on rappel and proficient in self-rescue techniques. It is one of the most scenic canyons in this area.
The hike out is strenuous and packed with lots of Class 4 scrambling with exposure .

This is not a guided trip. Hiking can be a dangerous activity with exposure, specific skills, etc..., and therefore you need to have the required skills to attend. Additionally, you are 100% liable for yourself, and you agree to assume all liability by joining us on this trip.
Required Skills:
- The ability to rappel
- The ability to rig a rappel device to provide the appropriate amount of friction for rope diameters from 8mm to 10mm rigged single strand.
- The ability to lock off at mid rappel.
- The ability to use a foot loop, rigged with a friction hitch or mechanical ascender, to free a stuck rappel device.
- The ability to climb and down-climb on rock.
- The ability to provide a bottom belay (aka fireman belay) for a rappeller.
Rappelling Gear - minimum required for participation in canyon events:
Helmet (meets UIAA standards)
Harness
Rappelling device
Extra Locking Carabiners.
2 or 3 -4mm - 6mm loops about 3' dia.
Gloves (optional but recommended)
Footwear appropriate to conditions
You should also bring: a pack, water (2-3 liters per person), Lunch/snack, clothing appropriate to anticipated weather incl a wind jacket, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, etc.,
Hiking / Canyoneering is a group activity. All participants are expected to contribute in a meaningful way. This may include:
Carrying rope and other equipment. Offering to bring your own ropes to minimize the wear & tear on organizer ropes. Providing basic equipment such as webbing or quick links . Providing vehicle shuttles when needed. Offer to reimburse event drivers for gas and wear & tear on their vehicles.
When doing a hike / canyon:
Each rappeler should offer the next person down a fireman's belay. At difficult down/up climbs hikers offer to spot or assist the next person. Do not simply continue on to the next obstacle.
Safety comes first. No hiker should ever feel self conscious about asking for assistance.
