The Nightingale is a bestselling 2015 historical fiction novel by Kristin Hannah, detailing the divergent paths of two French sisters surviving the Nazi occupation during World War II.

The story revolves around two sisters in France—Vianne Mauriac and Isabelle Rossignol—who are separated by age, experience, and ideology. When the Germans occupy France, Vianne makes impossible choices to protect her daughter, which includes allowing a German officer to be billeted in her home. Her younger sister Isabelle, a passionate rebel, joins the French Resistance. Isabelle becomes a daring operative, risking her life to smuggle downed Allied pilots, ultimately earning the code-name "The Nightingale".
