Walking Adventure along Bathers Way from Shepherds Hill to Bar Beach

Details

Join me for an afternoon walk along a stunning section of the Bathers Way, from Shepherds Hill to Bar Beach via the cliff-top Memorial Walk: a part of the city coastline known for its rich cultural and natural heritage.

From our start point at Shepherds Hill Reserve we’ll enjoy the broad vistas north to the early city and explore the remnants of this headland fort that once protected the city and its industries. As we take a short easy stroll south we’ll arrive at the start of the Memorial Walk, an impressive elevated walkway built to commemorate the 100th anniversary of both the beginning of steelmaking in Newcastle and the landing of the ANZACs at Gallipoli.

Along the Walkway there are breathtaking 360-degree views of ocean cliffs, rock shelves, and beaches as well as expansive inland views to the wider city and its harbour. It’s an ideal vantage point for photography.

Then as we make our way down the stepped section of the walkway we can appreciate the native heathland that covers the headland.

At Bar Beach we’ll have time to socialise, and enjoy a coffee outdoors at Swell Café overlooking the water. We’ll make a relaxed return in the later afternoon light.

This is a family friendly event. Dogs are not permitted on the Walkway.

Agenda
I will meet you at Shepherds Hill near the Cottage at 2.00pm. We’ll take time to enjoy the views and explore the historic gun emplacements and at 2.15pm head off along Cliff Street to Strzelecki Lookout.

From there we’ll follow the Memorial Walkway along the cliff line and then descend the stepped section to Memorial Drive and pause at the pretty viewing area overlooking Bar Beach.

We’ll then have time to enjoy a relaxed chat together with new friends and a coffee and snack from Swell’s Café next to the Surf Club.

We’ll return via the same route to Shepherds Hill.

The distance each way is 1.3km and it does include a 200m section with steps. The remainder is flat or gently sloping pathway. There is an alternate return path along Memorial Drive for anyone who would prefer to avoid going up the stairs.

We’ll go ahead whether its sunny or raining.

When you RSVP please click attend on the Event Page and I will be in touch via direct message. I will also be available in the Event Comments on the day.
