Cultural Walk and Birdwatching along Belmont Lagoon with Coffee by the Lake

Details

Join me for an inspiring walk along the Fernleigh Awabakal track following the edges of Belmont Lagoon. From the new elevated boardwalk we'll enjoy the broad outdoor views of the wetland sanctuary, and can look out for black swans, spoonbills and cormorants.

Near the beginning of the walk we’ll take time to appreciate the art and sculpture installations by local Aboriginal artists Shellie Smith and Daniella Chedzey and fellow artist Julie Squires. These works mark the cultural significance of the lagoon for the Awabakal people, and Aboriginal knowledge sharing about the creation story known as When the Moon Cried.

Going along the Fernleigh Track we’ll also be following the former railway line built by the Redhead Coal Mining Company. The colliery lands and heritage sites are now part of the larger Belmont Wetlands State Park, an area conserved for wildlife and recreation through the efforts of local environmental advocates.

Further south we’ll reach the striking new pedestrian bridge over Cold Tree Creek where we can view the intriguing anti-tank canal dug in World War 2 to deter possible tank invasion across Blacksmiths Beach.

After our return walk we’ll have time to socialise with a coffee and something to eat at the nearby Yacht Club, and enjoy the views over Lake Macquarie.

Agenda

I’ll meet you at 8am under the trees in the carpark at 29 Alick Street.

We’ll set out at 8.15am and join the Fernleigh Awabakal Track heading south. We’ll stop to spend some time in the place of the Awabakal sculpture installations, and from there follow the elevated boardwalk to the viewing platform with its outlook to the wetlands and birdlife.

We’ll then continue south along the main path to arrive at the impressive new bridge over Cold Tree Creek with its great perspective on the canal. There’s a short birdwatching loop on the south side of the bridge that we’ll explore, and then make our way back on the main track to Alick Street.

From there we’ll cross the highway, and stroll through Cullen Park to the Lake Macquarie Yacht Club. We’ll have time to chat with new friends, and enjoy the view with a coffee and snack at Crusoes Cafe.

Our relaxed walk will cover a total of 3.5km on a fairly flat and well graded track, with stops for the artworks, the views and birdwatching.

The path can be popular and we’ll be sharing it with other walkers and cyclists as well.
