Arts and Heritage Walk: The Lock Up to Nobbys Lighthouse with Chat over Coffee

Details

Join me for a relaxed walk exploring the arts, heritage and scenic treasures of Newcastle East and the harbour.

Together we’ll experience The Lock Up where the cells of an 1800s police station have been reimagined as a museum with contemporary art spaces. If you’re new in town the annual Collect 2025 on exhibition is a great opportunity to connect with the local art scene in the Hunter and beyond.

Further east we’ll take in the Convict Lumber Yard, and knowledge sharing about the city’s earliest industries, as well the striking sculpture known affectionately as Dig Here. Then there’s a pleasant walk across the Foreshore parklands to Nobbys Beach, and along the convict-built breakwater, where we can appreciate the harbour shipping channel on one side and the dunes and open ocean on the other.

Heading uphill to the Lighthouse on Nobbys-Whibayganba headland the views open up in all directions. We’ll have time to enjoy the new Lighthouse Arts exhibition, and outdoors explore around the historic ‘pepper pot’ lighthouse, or look out for tugs, shipping and whales.

We’ll make our way back along the harbour edge to the café at The Station to socialise and enjoy a coffee with new friends.

Agenda
I will meet you at 10am outside The Lock Up gallery in Hunter Street.

We’ll have time to explore the heritage building and the collection on exhibition, and then set out along Scott Street to see the Convict Lumber Yard sculpture, and from there cross the Foreshore parklands to Nobby’s Beach. Then we'll follow the Macquarie Pier breakwater and take the short access track uphill to Nobbys Lighthouse.

Our return path is along the harbour edge to Tabnabs Café at The Station, which is close to our start point.

The overall walk is 4km on easy going paved surfaces with no stairs, only a short 250m uphill section to the Lighthouse.

We’ll go ahead whether its sunny or raining. This is a dog friendly event.

Location
The Lock Up
90 Hunter Street
Newcastle

The area is popular on weekends so allow time to find a street parking space, or use the Bolton Street parking station that is close by. If you’re coming by light rail travel to the Newcastle Beach or Queens Wharf stop and then walk the short distance to The Lock Up.

When you RSVP please click attend on the Event Page and I will be in touch via direct message. I will also be available in the Event Comments on the day.
