Details

Welcome to the first session of Marginalia.
We will be reading Kazuo Ishiguro’s masterpiece, The Remains of the Day.
Set in the post-WWII era, the novel follows Stevens, an elderly English butler on a short road trip, as he looks back on his decades of loyal service at Darlington Hall. On the surface, it is a quiet, nostalgic recollection. But as we read closer, Ishiguro masterfully reveals the subtle nuances, unspoken regrets, and the profound layers of human nature hidden beneath the narrator's professional mask.
Through this text, we will explore themes of self-deception, wasted opportunities, dignity, and what it truly means to look back on a life lived.
