Kentish Town: From River Village to Railways, Industry and Pop Culture
Details
Kentish Town – probably derived from Ken-ditch, meaning “bed of a waterway” – developed into a major industrial hub in the nineteenth century with the arrival of the railway. Until then, it had been an idyllic village along the River Fleet. The pipe that now contains this hidden river can be seen on this walk.
During its industrial heyday, Kentish Town was home to the largest and most innovative false teeth factory in Europe, located on Anglers Lane. Other notable manufactures included pianos and furniture, reflecting the area’s vibrant craft and industrial economy.
Today, Kentish Town blends its industrial past with village charm. Former factory buildings – such as the Piano Factory – have been converted into residential spaces, while picturesque lanes and cottages preserve the area’s earlier character.
More recently, Kentish Town has gained a touch of pop-cultural fame as the location of a favourite kebab shop of Taylor Swift. In addition, a local square and the historic The Bull and Gate pub feature in her videos.
The walk is approximately 6 km long and concludes at The Bull and Gate pub.
