NOTE: The 29 Mile Sierra Vista Trail hike was originally planned for Mar 21, 2026. That is the date of the Bataan Memorial Marathon. I asked their planning committee if they could move their race. They said no! So, I moved the 29 Mile Sierra Vista Trail hike to Feb 21, 2026 instead.

Goal: Complete one of the required 2-3 hikes to attend the Sierra Vista Trail Hike. In this hike we will be traversing the four (4) mile trail around the base loop of “A” Mountain three (3) times. This comes to about 12 miles of hiking. The following links are to the 29 mile Sierra Vista Hike on Feb 21, 2026: First link to the Borderlands site & the second to the Jornada Hiking and Outdoor Club site.

Welcome Long Distance Hikers,
This first qualifying hike represents the type of terrain we will be encountering between the Start of the 29 mile Sierra Vista Trail Hike and the 14 mile checkpoint which is the Pena Blanca Trail head. We will hike at a reasonable speed. What is that you say? It is generally accepted that 2.5 to 3 MPH is an average, long distance hiking speed. I have completed one loop of the “A” Mountain base trail at a rate of 3.7 MPH. I guess we will see what adding 2 more loops will do to that hiking speed.
Equipment you may want to carry with you while hiking:

  1. Light jacket/windbreaker
  2. Gloves
  3. Hat
  4. Sunglasses
  5. Handkerchief
  6. Hiking poles
  7. Cell phone w/brick or solar charger
  8. Antibiotic cream and bandages
  9. Lip balm, hand sanitizer, & sunscreen
  10. High protein energy bars
  11. Three (3) quarts water
  12. Electrolytes
  13. Headlamp & extra batteries

[NOTE: If you hiked "Qualifying Hike #1" this hike (QH#2) does not automatically count as your 2 qualifying hikes. You will still need to hike another qualifying hike. This hike is to catch hikers that could not make QH#1 and those that need a refresh after the holidays. Sorry!]
