On Friday, January 13 (15.00-17.00), we invite all the makers of Amsterdam to a festive gathering. The Hogeschool van Amsterdam is opening a brand new Makerslab. The Makerslab, a collaboration of the HvA faculties of Digital Media & Creative Industry and Technology, stems from the long-standing tradition of the Fablabs. This "mother of makerspaces" is a space for creativity and experimentation that offers every maker opportunities to develop their own maker mindset and skills.

In 1998, MIT professor Neil Gershenfeld started his course How to make (almost) anything, which would form the basis of a global maker movement and the establishment of many Fablabs. So too in Amsterdam, where Waag opened Europe's first independent Fablab 15 (and a half) years ago in the middle of the Nieuwmarkt. By now, it is impossible to imagine the urban infrastructure without these creative makerspaces.
Besides the 15th anniversary of Fablab Amsterdam and the official opening of the beautiful HvA Makerslab, there is another reason for a party. MIT professor Neil Gershenfeld is coming to Amsterdam on January 13! We are proud that he wants to talk to us about the role of makerslabs in the city and education of today and the future.

On the programme:

  • The official opening of the HvA Makerslab
  • In conversation with the founder of the very first Fablab at MIT - Neil Gershenfeld
  • Contribution from Professor of Practice and Waag Futurelab director - Marleen Stikker
  • A tour of the new Makerslab
  • Drinks and concrete examples from the maker community
