Understanding Breath: For Stress, Resilience & Performance (Workshop)

Understanding Breath: For Stress, Resilience & Performance (Workshop)

Pau, Rda. de Sant Pau, 47 , Eixample, 08015,, Barcelona, ES

Breathing shapes how we think, feel, and perform — yet most of us misunderstand it. Oxygen is rarely the limiting factor. Carbon dioxide plays a central role in how oxygen is delivered, how stress is regulated, and why breathlessness often appears even when oxygen levels are normal.

TICKETS MUST BE PURCHASED HERE IN ADVANCE - VIA LUMA.

In this Growth Lab Live workshop, we explore the science of CO₂ tolerance, nervous system regulation, and the hidden link between breathing patterns and anxiety. You’ll learn why overbreathing can lock the body into a stress response, and how simple adjustments to breath can restore balance in real time.

Understanding CO₂, Oxygen and Stress

  • Why oxygen is rarely the problem
  • CO₂ as a regulator, not a waste gas
  • How overbreathing triggers stress and air hunger

Breath and the Nervous System

  • Sympathetic vs parasympathetic states
  • Why slow, nasal breathing signals safety
  • Using breath to downregulate stress in real time

Practical Regulation Techniques

  • Nasal breathing at rest
  • Slowing the exhale
  • Reduced breathing to improve CO₂ tolerance

Measuring Breathing Efficiency

  • Oxygen saturation. what it shows and what it doesn’t
  • Breath holds as functional tests, not willpower challenges

Simple Assessments

  • BOLT Test for baseline breathing efficiency
  • Walking breath holds to assess recovery and stress response

The session combines clear physiology with practical tools. We’ll cover nasal breathing, slowing the exhale, reduced breathing techniques, and simple assessments like the BOLT Test and walking breath holds to evaluate breathing efficiency and recovery.

Join us for an evidence-based, grounded approach to using breath as a lever for stress regulation, resilience, and everyday performance.

Agenda:

  • Doors open: 7.00pm
  • Workshop starts: 7.30pm
  • Q&A session: 8.30pm
  • Drinks & Networking: 9.00pm

About the Speaker:

Macarena Musante is the founder of Ocean Breath Barcelona, has traveled to more than 50 countries studying yoga, breathwork, freediving, and cold exposure. It was after a serious motorcycle accident in Thailand, three surgeries to recover her knee, and a rehabilitation process to walk again that she became passionate about the healing power of breathing.

She dedicated herself to exploring different breathwork techniques in Bali and the power of apnea and freediving, earning her certification in the Canary Islands. Due to the chronic pain she experienced, she trained in cold exposure and ice baths.

All this knowledge, combined with her Master's degree in Neuroscience, allowed her to give a scientific basis to her courses and training. She is currently based in Barcelona and teaches courses in Europe, Latin America, and Asia.

The Science of a Healthy Brain: Habits, Longevity & Genetics

The Science of a Healthy Brain: Habits, Longevity & Genetics

The Cover Club at the Sir Victor Hotel, Carrer Rosselló 265,, Barcelona, ES

Ticket links below - tickets must be purchase in advance to attend this event.

Brain ageing is not just a clock ticking down. It is a story written by your genes, your environment, and the habits you repeat for decades. Then there are the outliers. People who stay mentally sharp far longer than biology seems to allow.

Price from 12 Euros: You must purchase tickets to attend via LUMA - here.

In this Growth Lab Live session, Eloy Santos takes us on a journey into the hidden layers of brain ageing, using an in depth case study of the world’s oldest person as a recurring thread. What can extreme longevity reveal about resilience. What signals show up in the body long before cognitive decline. What parts of ageing look “modifiable” rather than inevitable.

We will unpack how genetics and lifelong lifestyle interact through mechanisms like epigenetics, the microbiome, and other molecular layers that quietly influence inflammation, repair, and brain function. Then we zoom out to the future. What therapeutic strategies are emerging right now, including new classes of drugs being explored to improve brain ageing, and what they can realistically deliver.

    What you will take away

    • The core biological drivers of brain ageing, explained clearly
    • Why some brains resist decline longer than others
    • The roles of epigenetics and the microbiome in brain health
    • Where the science is heading next, from biomarkers to new interventions
    • Practical ways to think about “brain resilience” across a lifetime

    About the speaker:

Eloy Santos is a researcher at the Josep Carreras Research Institute in Barcelona. He is a PhD student investigating the molecular basis of ageing and longevity, with a focus on brain ageing and age associated brain disorders.

    • Tickets: 12-14 euros - via this link.
    • Venue: The Cover Club
    • Talk starts: 19:00 - 20:00
    • Q&A: 20:00 - 20:30

  • Anti-Aging Nutrition for Women: How to Age Better From the Inside Out

Anti-Aging Nutrition for Women: How to Age Better From the Inside Out

    Location not specified yet

Anti-aging is often framed around appearance, yet what most people are really seeking is sustained energy, metabolic health, cognitive clarity, skin quality, and long-term vitality.

Price from 9 euros - tickets must be purchased here.

This Growth Lab Live session takes a clear, evidence-based approach to how nutrition and lifestyle influence the biology of ageing, moving beyond surface-level fixes to focus on outcomes that genuinely matter.
Defining biological ageing and exploring why chronic inflammation and oxidative stress sit at the root of many modern symptoms and age-related conditions is a crucial starting point.

Which ageing mechanisms are most actionable in everyday life? Which are the processes we can realistically influence rather than those that remain largely theoretical?

The core of the talk focuses on building an anti-ageing plate grounded in anti-inflammatory and antioxidant principles, using quality protein, real fibre, and complex carbohydrates as its foundation. We also examine why meal sequence matters, and how eating fibre first, followed by protein and then carbohydrates, can meaningfully impact metabolism, energy levels, and long-term health.

We will explore complementary strategies such as exercise, overnight fasting, and cold exposure, and how these practices support mitochondrial function and healthy ageing when applied thoughtfully.
The session concludes with a short, hands-on mini workshop featuring two simple and enjoyable functional recipes, a collagen smoothie and an adaptogenic, nootropic coffee mocktail, ensuring participants leave with practical actions they can apply immediately in daily life.

    About the Speaker: Aida Prelgauskaite

Aída is an anti-ageing nutrition specialist focused on helping women over 40 restore energy, vitality, and long-term wellbeing through nutrition and sustainable lifestyle habits. Her work centres on holistic rejuvenation, looking beyond aesthetics to address the biological processes that shape health, skin quality, and ageing over time.

Her journey began in the beauty industry, where she worked as a Beauty Advisor and Makeup Artist for Dior. There, she developed a deep understanding of skincare, high-end products, and the external rituals of beauty. Over time, however, she recognised that lasting transformation could not be achieved through cosmetics alone. True rejuvenation, she discovered, begins from within.

This insight led her to specialise in a nutrition-led approach to anti-ageing, placing diet, metabolic health, and daily habits at the centre of skin health and vitality. Today, Aída helps women move beyond surface-level solutions, using evidence-based nutrition and lifestyle strategies to support healthy ageing, radiant skin, and a more resilient body from the inside out.

  • Warning Signs and Philosophy: How to Shape the Future

Warning Signs and Philosophy: How to Shape the Future

    Location not specified yet

We are constantly being warned, but we seldom heed warnings. Cautioned about authoritarian leaders, climate change, technological dystopias, or other catastrophes, we fail to take action or even take them seriously. Too often warnings are dismissed—much like the artists, scientists, environmentalists, and intellectuals who deliver them. Why don’t we listen?

Tickets from 10 Euros - must be purchased here.

In this Growth Lab LIVE session, Santiago Zabala asks us to think of warnings as “signs from the future.” He argues that warnings—as distinct from predictions—invite us to see the possibility of a radical break from the present. Predictions tell us to submit to the inevitable, but warnings ask us to take part in shaping a different future.

    About the speaker:

Santiago Zabala is ICREA Research Professor of Philosophy at the Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona. He is the author of a number of books, including Why Only Art Can Save Us: Aesthetics and the Absence of Emergency (2017) and Being at Large. Freedom in the Age of Alternative Facts (2020), and most recently, Signs from the Future. A Philosophy of Warnings (2025). Zabala has also written opinion articles for publications including the New York Times, Al Jazeera, and the Los Angeles Review of Books.
