Some of you may have heard the name Tenrikyo in passing, while for others it may be entirely new.

In truth, Tenrikyo is woven into Japanese life more deeply than most people realize. For example—

  • It began in Tenri City, Nara Prefecture, and is the only religion in Japan whose name is also the name of a city.
  • It has produced many well-known figures: Olympic judo champion Tadahiro Nomura (three consecutive gold medals), iconic singer-songwriter Miyuki Nakajima, and Rugby Japan captain Michihito Tatekawa, among others.
  • Its followers number about 1.7 million worldwide, in over 90 countries. In Japan alone, there are roughly 15,000 churches—about the same number as FamilyMart convenience stores!
  • It operates Japan’s largest disaster relief organization, the Tenrikyo Disaster Relief Hinokishin Corps, which dispatched 16,000 members during the Great East Japan Earthquake.
  • It has longstanding connections with business, academia, and even the Imperial Household—counting among its friends the likes of Panasonic founder Konosuke Matsushita and former Kyoto University president Isamu Hirasawa.
  • Tenrikyo respects other faiths, participating alongside Shinto and Tendai Buddhism in the World Religious Leaders’ Prayer for Peace.
  • Its large-scale events include a children’s festival drawing 250,000 visitors each year and a New Year’s celebration serving free osechi meals to 60,000 people.
  • In recent years, it has even been gaining attention on YouTube and TikTok.

In short, Tenrikyo is an essential key to understanding Japanese history and culture.

It is also a way of life that can enrich human existence at its very core—offering joy, warmth, and a deeply connected community.

■A Brief Look at Tenrikyo’s Teachings
The teachings are simple, deeply rational, and yet unshakably bright, warm, and spiritual.

Tenri refers to the universal principles and natural laws that govern all existence—just as the speed of light is one of the immutable laws of nature.

The One who created these principles and humanity itself is called Tenri-O-no-Mikoto. Out of affection, we call this deity Oyagami-sama—“God the Parent.”

God the Parent created human beings out of a desire to share in our joy-filled lives—what we call Yoki-gurashi, “Joyous Life.”

■What is the Joyous Life?
It is a humble way of living:

  • Grateful for the blessings of nature that sustain us
  • Filled with the joy of being protected and nurtured
  • Respecting and helping one another

Since God the Parent created and protects all people, everyone on earth is a brother or sister—there are no true “strangers.”

Tenrikyo teaches that the purpose of life is not to seek happiness in the afterlife, but to build a Joyous Life here, in this very world—and that every person has the potential to do so.

It also teaches that our bodies are not our own, but “borrowed” from God the Parent.

Underlying this is the worldview that the entire universe is the “body of God.”

We live constantly enveloped in God’s being and parental love, borrowing a part of that body as our own.

This belief shares aspects with both the monotheism of Abrahamic traditions and the pantheism found in Mahayana Buddhism’s concept of Buddha-nature.

Since all events occur within the body of God, illness, hardship, and every life circumstance are seen as messages from God the Parent—guiding us toward the Joyous Life.

Recognizing the parental love within these experiences, accepting them with gratitude and joy, and working to grow in heart is called tanno.

Tenrikyo does not simply offer prayer as a way to have wishes granted. Instead, it invites us to look anew at ourselves and the world through the lens of Tenri’s principles—the very laws of reality—and to actively shape our lives.

■About Me
I was born into a Tenrikyo Church.

Our church has run activities such as kotekitai—a marching band program that teaches music to local children—and operates a food bank, contributing to the community in many ways.

My hobbies include playing the piano. My favorite foods are nuts and cheese (I’m firmly on the “fats don’t make you fat” team ☺️).

I married my husband—a fellow Tenrikyo follower who runs a startup in Tokyo—and moved to the city.

Tokyo is endlessly exciting and stimulating, but I also see its challenges: isolation, indifference, and poverty among them.

Even if Tenrikyo is unfamiliar to you, I am convinced its teachings have real value for today’s world.

Through this group, I hope to introduce Tenrikyo—even just a little—and, more importantly, to create a community where you can feel truly at ease, grow together, and walk a better path in life.

「天理教」という名前、少しだけ耳にしたことがある方もいれば、まったく初めて聞く方もいるかもしれません。

実は天理教は、思っている以上に私たちの暮らしの中に溶け込んでいるんです。例えば…

  • 奈良県天理市から始まった教えで、日本の宗教では唯一、宗教名が街の名前になっています。
  • 柔道オリンピックで金メダルを3大会連続で獲得した野村忠弘選手、国民的歌手の中島みゆきさん、ラグビー日本代表キャプテンの立川理道選手など、多くの著名人を輩出。
  • 信者は国内外合わせて約170万人。世界90カ国に広がり、国内には約15,000の教会（ファミリーマートとほぼ同数！）があります。
  • 東日本大震災の際には1万6千人が出動した、日本最大の災害救援組織「災害救援ひのきしん隊」を運営。
  • パナソニック創業者・松下幸之助氏や元京都大学総長の平澤興氏など、財界や学術界、皇室とも関わりが深いです。
  • 他宗教にも敬意を払い、神道本庁や天台宗と共に「世界宗教者平和の祈り」に参加。
  • 毎年25万人が訪れる子ども向けのお祭りや、新年に6万人へ無料でおせちを振る舞う行事など、規模の大きなイベントも多数。

まさに、日本の歴史や文化を知る上で欠かせない重要な信仰といえます。また、人間の人生を本質的に豊かにしてくれる生き方であり、喜びと温かさに溢れたコミュニティでもあります。

■教理について（かんたんに）
少し教理について触れてみましょう。

教理はシンプルで、理性的でありながらも底抜けに明るく、温かく、また霊的な教えと言えます。

まず天理とは、この世界すべてに共通する道理や摂理のこと。光の速さのような「天然自然の理」もそのひとつです。

この天理と人間を創ったのが「天理王命（てんりおうのみこと）」。私たちは親しみを込めて「親神様」と呼んでいます。

親神様は、人間が喜びにあふれて暮らす姿＝「陽気ぐらし」を共に楽しみたいという思いから、人間を創られました。

「陽気ぐらし」とは、私たちを育む大自然を司る親神様の恵みに感謝し、そのご守護に生かされている喜びを身体いっぱいに感じながら、互いに尊重し助け合って暮らす、慎み深い生き方のことです。

また、親神様はすべての人間を創り、ご守護をもって育てられている親であり、世界中の人間は親神様を親と仰ぐ兄弟姉妹であって、他人は一人もいません。

天理教では、あの世ではなくこの世界に「陽気ぐらし」の世界を作ることが人間の生きる意味だと教えられています。また、人間は誰しもが「陽気ぐらし」ができる可能性を持っていると教えています。

さらに天理教では、私たちの身体は自分のものではなく、親神様からの「かりもの」であると教えられます。

この教えの背景には、この世界全体が「神のからだ」であるという世界観があります。私たちは神の体や親心に常に包まれ、その体の一部を我が身としてお借りしているという感覚です。

この教えは、ある種、キリスト教などのセム系一神教と、大乗仏教の「仏性」に見られるような汎神論（神を擬人化した人格神を認めず、一切を神と同一視する立場）の両方の側面を持っているといえます。

すべては神の身体の中で起こることなので、病気や悩み、あらゆる出来事は、私たちを「陽気ぐらし」に導くための親神様からのメッセージであり、その中に込められた親心に気づき、感謝して喜んで受け止め、心の成長に励むことを「たんのう」と言います。

天理教は願いごとを叶えるために、ただ「拝み祈祷」をするのではなく、この世の法則である天理の教えをもとに、自分と世界を見つめ直し、人生を切り開いていく教えです。

■私の自己紹介
ここで少し私の自己紹介をさせてください。

私は天理教の教会に生まれました。教会では、地域の子どもたちに音楽を教える「鼓笛」という活動や、フードバンクを運営するなど、地域社会への貢献活動を行ってきました。

趣味はピアノ演奏、好きな食べ物はナッツとチーズです（脂質は太らないのです☺️）。

東京でスタートアップを経営する天理教の夫と結婚して東京に来ました。私にとって東京はこれ以上ないほど楽しく刺激にあふれる場所ですが、同時に孤独、無関心、貧困など、多くの課題も目にしています。

天理教と言われても聞き馴染みがないかもしれませんが、私は今の社会に必ず役に立つ教えだと確信しています。

このグループでの活動を通して、天理教について少しでも知ってもらい、何よりも皆さんが心の底から安心できて、互いに高め合い、より良い人生を歩めるコミュニティを作りたいと考えています。

当たり前のことですが、無理な勧誘などは一切ありません。少しでも天理教に興味を持ったり、日本の文化を知りたかったり、誰かと美味しいご飯を食べたい人は、お気軽にご参加ください🫶❣️
